AI startup count on Crunchbase, 2021 → 2026
The datapoint
| Snapshot | Crunchbase count of “Artificial Intelligence”-tagged startups | Source |
|---|---|---|
| September 2021 | 27,900 | weber-ai-startup-business-models §1 (introduction) |
| 2026 (user-reported, not independently verified) | ~97,000 | User note at ingest 2026-05-24 |
Growth ≈ 3.5× over ~4.5 years — roughly consistent with an AI-startup-population doubling on a ~2-year cadence.
Caveat
The 2026 figure is user-reported and was not independently verified at the time of ingest. Treat as order-of-magnitude. The Crunchbase tag is also noisy — Weber et al. note that 8,076 of the 2020-vintage count actually passed minimal sanity filters (post-2010, ≥$1M funding, AI-as-core-product). Apply the same filter ratio to the 2026 number for any quantitative argument.
Why this matters
- Population growth is the structural background for H2_u-curve-of-value’s “middle dies” question: the firm count in the middle is rising even if value capture is falling.
- It contextualizes weber-ai-startup-business-models — the 2021 four-pattern taxonomy was distilled from a far smaller population than what exists in 2026. A taxonomy refresh may be warranted, particularly to accommodate agentic-workflow providers (a plausible fifth pattern; see ai-startup-business-archetypes-weber §“2021 → 2026 vintage shift”).
